Frequently Asked Questions

What is 3D casting?

3D casting is a 3D model produced from the hand or foot, showing all the intricate details, produced in a hard wearing stone material.

What’s involved in the process?

Your little one’s hand or foot is placed into a soft mould (similar consistency to a thick paste) for approximately one minute until set. It is then gently removed and comes out clean, leaving an impression of the baby’s hand or foot. You will be able to hold your child throughout the process. Once the moulds are complete, we will complete the rest of the process later.

How long does the appointment take?

While the actual moulding process only takes about 3-4 minutes per hand or foot, we usually allow 45 minutes to an hour for each appointment, to give us time to talk through all your options available for the finished product(s). It also gives us time to ensure your child is given time to get comfortable before we start taking the moulds – especially if you have travelled to us for the appointment.

Can I have more than one cast taken from each mould?

Unfortunately, no. The moulds have to be broken to remove the cast inside – meaning each cast is completely individual.

Is it safe?

Yes, the moulding product (alginate) is made from seaweed and is the same product dentists use to take impressions of teeth. It is biodegradable and non-toxic.

Why should I use Impressions in Time rather than doing a home casting kit?

Before being trained in 3D casting, I tried a home casting kit with my son. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a great success! It would therefore take a number of attempts to get a good result, which can be pricey and frustrating.  I truly believe that the best way to achieve a great finished product is to use someone who has been trained and has experience in producing 3D casts.

Can you guarantee a good finished result?

Usually, yes – however, on occasion the mould will not have worked out. This will be discovered once the mould is broken away from the cast, usually the same or following day after the appointment with you. If this happens, I will contact you to arrange another appointment as soon as possible to try again at no additional charge.

How old does my child have to be?

We can produce casts for any age child, from newborn. If the child is over one year old, a small additional fee is chargeable. Please contact us to discuss this further.

Why will my order take 4-6 weeks to complete?

This is because the cast requires a long drying time to fully dry out before it can be painted (if chosen) and mounted. This is incredibly important and cannot be rushed otherwise moisture will be trapped inside the cast, causing decay in time.

Do you do gift vouchers?

Yes! Our gift vouchers are very popular as presents for new parents or baby showers. Please contact us to discuss further.

How do I pay?

The full balance is payable at the time of appointment. We accept cash, bank transfer, credit or debit card payments. We understand that at times it can be difficult to pay the full balance at the time of the appointment – maternity pay isn’t always great! Please speak to us regarding payment plans, these are something we are happy to offer when requested.

Do you produce adult size casts?

Yes!  From engagement or wedding hand holding casts to capture that special time in your life, to family hand holding casts and ruby, golden or even diamond wedding anniversary hand holding casts to mark an amazing milestone, adult hand casts can make as much of an impression as baby casts. For more information and pricing, please contact us to discuss your requirements further.
